    The 20th Century Economy

    The U.S and China are placing opposite bets on the future of world energy. Under Trump, the federal government is taking away all support for renewable energy – wind, solar and battery storage – and providing subsidies of more than $34 billion dollars a year to fossil fuel companies – oil, gas and coal.

    So who is leading the way in 21st Century energy, and who is sticking with horse-and-buggy energy technology?
    Both the trends in energy production and the needs of the planet tell us that the future of energy is clean and renewable, and not the burning of fossil fuel.

    China is proving this today. The Chinese government has nurtured solar and wind power and the battery technology that makes renewable energy usable around the clock. With tech breakthroughs and mass production, solar has become the world’s cheapest source of power, and wind is close behind.
    Renewable energy doesn’t pollute the air with deadly particles or greenhouse gases, and It keeps getting more efficient and cheaper. Also, it’s powered by the sun and wind, which can’t be cut off in the Strait of Hormuz like oil and gas.

    In both 2024 and 2025, China built more solar and wind energy than the rest of the world combined. And China exported more than $200 billion in clean energy technology in 2025. Plus, China’s battery know-how helped Chinese EV exports to more than double this March to 350,000 vehicles a month.

    By doing everything it can to squelch American solar and wind industries, the Trump Administration has left the world markets in solar, wind and battery technology and products to China. Unless we turn this around, the American economy and American jobs will suffer for decades to come.

    Agrivoltaics: Farming with Solar

    People fear we’re taking farmland to build solar. They don’t realize that you can have both, according to Charles Gould, a Bioenergy Educator with Michigan State University Extension.

    “Agrivoltaics” allow you to have agriculture and solar on the same piece of land. Michigan has a great potential to develop agrivoltaics, especially with sheep. Sheep do a better job of maintaining the vegetation under solar arrays than machines. The United States imports 75% of its lamb meat, but less than half of Michigan’s meat processing capabilities for lamb is being used.

    Agrivoltaics offers a fantastic opportunity to help preserve farmland by stabilizing farmers’ income so they do not face bankruptcy and sell their farmland off to developers.
